A new study suggests that listening to music regularly may be linked to a lower risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Researchers analyzed data from more than 10,000 older adults and found that those who consistently listened to music had a 39% lower chance of developing dementia compared with those who rarely listened.

Music and cognitive protection

The study, published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry in May 2026, looked at a wide range of music-related activities, from playing instruments to everyday listening. The strongest link appeared in people who simply listened to music often. This group also showed 17% lower rates of cognitive impairment, a noticeable decline in thinking and memory that does not yet interfere with daily life. They also scored higher on overall cognitive tests and had better episodic memory, the ability to recall everyday events such as conversations or appointments.

How music affects the brain

Previous research has shown that listening to music can reduce stress hormones, lower anxiety, and improve sleep quality. These factors play a direct role in long-term cognitive health. Familiar songs in particular activate memory centers in the brain and strengthen neural connections. Studies also indicate that music paired with movement, such as tapping rhythms or dancing, may boost coordination and motor timing, which could further support brain health. Music stimulates many parts of the brain at once, including emotion, memory, attention, and motor centers. This widespread activation may help preserve neural flexibility, the brain’s ability to adapt over time. That flexibility is considered important for healthy aging.

Simple ways to include music in daily life

The study focused on listening to music rather than playing instruments or attending concerts. The benefits were tied to making music a regular habit. Researchers noted several practical ways to integrate music into a routine. Listening to a favorite playlist during morning routines, cooking, driving, or walking can provide cognitive advantages. Keeping the volume at a moderate level is recommended, as chronic exposure to loud sound can damage hearing, and hearing loss is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Active engagement, such as singing along, tapping rhythms, or dancing, adds sensory-motor involvement that may boost cognitive stimulation beyond passive listening.

Part of a broader approach

Music is not a standalone solution. The study found that it works best alongside other brain-healthy habits, such as getting enough sleep, maintaining social connections, staying physically active, and following a nutrient-rich diet. The findings do not prove that music causes a lower risk of dementia, but they reinforce the idea that small, consistent habits can support well-being as people age.
