New research suggests that a person’s attachment style in romantic relationships may play a role in how well they sleep. The study, published in the journal SLEEP, found a link between relationship insecurity and poor sleep, and also indicated that lack of sleep can increase feelings of jealousy.

Researchers examined the connection between attachment styles and sleep quality. An attachment style is a pattern of behavior in relationships. Anxious attachment, for example, is marked by a deep fear of abandonment. People with this style often feel insecure in their relationships and seek frequent reassurance from their partners.

The study involved 68 young adults. Participants completed questionnaires about their sleep habits and their relationships. They also provided daily reports for two weeks about their emotions and behaviors.

The results showed that anxious attachment can negatively affect sleep quality. The authors noted that sleep problems were linked to more envy and jealousy in social situations, but only for those with higher levels of relationship anxiety. The researchers concluded that the effects of sleep on emotions may differ based on a person’s attachment style. They stated that people with insecure attachment may be more vulnerable to the social and emotional consequences of poor sleep.

Addressing Sleep and Attachment Issues

People who struggle with anxious attachment can work to develop a more secure attachment style. This process often requires time, patience, and support from a mental health professional. Recognizing when an anxious attachment style is triggered is the first step.

According to study co-author Giovanni Alvarado, individuals with anxious attachment may be more prone to feelings of envy and jealousy when they are sleep-deprived. This finding helps explain why some people have more trouble handling social situations when they are tired. It also suggests that interventions for sleep problems could be tailored to a person’s relationship style.

To improve sleep, experts recommend sticking to basic sleep hygiene practices. These include going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, keeping the bedroom cool and dark, and using a high-quality sleep supplement that is supported by research.

The connection between relationship insecurity and poor sleep is a known stressor for many people. Understanding this link may help individuals find new ways to address both their attachment style and their sleep problems. The study provides early evidence that a person’s emotional state in relationships is closely tied to their physical rest, and that poor sleep can make social interactions more difficult for those who are already prone to insecurity.
